The Authorities of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly is sleeping on duty as traders , pedestrians ignore social distancing ,trade on pavements in the Kumasi central business center.

In a sidelined interview with Derrick Ekuoba Gyasi some of the traders who occupy streets and pavements vowed not to leave unless the Assembly provides them a better alternative to ply their trade.

The Assembly recently relocated traders to Race course temporarily, to pave way for the completion of the Kejetia Redevelopment Project.

Sellers trading on Pavements

Most of the traders have defied the orders and are trading on pavements further ignoring the social distancing protocols under the watch of the toothless KMA Boss, Mr Osei Asibey Antwi.

“People are busy every day selling here ,so as a matter of fact ,it has created congestion between pedestrians and the traders ,paving way for pickpockets. It is not easy using that route here, I blame it on those selling here and the lackadaisical attitude of the KMA”, a pedestrian lamented at Kejetia roundabout.

Although the Assembly has deployed City Guards to control both human and vehicular traffic but these city guards have developed cordial relationship with those recalcitrant traders and some drivers making it difficult to enforce the law on them, a trader disclosed.

The seller further disclosed that some of the city guards distort monies from the traders allowing them to trade at unapproved places.

“I have my store here and can say without fear that the Assembly has failed in ensuring sanity at the Kumasi Business Center”, said the traders.
