“Poverty in Ghana is unbearable; 2012 was better”– Assembly Member

Assembly member for Torgodo Electoral Area – Hon Dominic Senyo Yahesu

The Assembly member for Torgodo electoral area in the North Tongu district of the Volta Region, Hon Dominic Senyo Yahesu has said poverty and hardship in the country has apparently become unbearable on the ordinary Ghanaian.

He said Over 67% of Ghanaians are living below the poverty line nowadays.

He said Ghanaians saw poverty reduction and robust economic growth between 2012 and 2017.But since 2018 the economy has vehemently slowed down which appears to have resulted in some visible poverty augmentation in Ghana.

He explained that political leaders are unaware of the substantial rise in poverty and the hardship Ghanaians are going through but they find ways and means to put their families and friends in the various government institutions living the qualified Ghanaian citizen who can do the job.

“The problem is that past and Presidents of the nation are always busy positioning unqualified people (families and friends) to get ministerial jobs and some “retired” expert to secure jobs when their government is power”.

Opposing President Nana Addo’s statement at the 63rd Ghana’s Independence Day celebration in Kumasi which he said “I have fought poverty out of Ghanaian society…”, consequently, Mr Dominic Senyo Yahesu claims the president’s comment is null and void since poverty has fast risen again in Ghana.

He asked that “Mr. President, how can you say now that the poverty in Ghana has decline substantially in 2019 as opposed by many people that it has rise unremarkably?”

However, Mr Dominic Senyo Yahesu is optimistic that poverty reduction and robust economic growth in Ghana can be accomplished if only the youths are employed into prominent positions in Ghana.
