We should expand the Electoral College for any card bearing member to vote in primaries- Majority leader

Majority leader in Parliament, Mr.Osei Kyei Mensah has said political parties should expand Electoral College in order for every card bearing members of political parties to participate in Parliamentary primaries.

The Suame Constituency Member of parliament stated that vote buying has been a negative legacy political parties are trading on and this has resulted in the overthrown of many experienced law makers.

It could be recalled that some parliamentary candidates in the just ended NPP primaries allegedly influenced delegates with money to vote for them.

However the majority leader says such tongue-tied act is gradually destroying the fruitful democracy Ghana is enjoying and must be halted.

But, if card bearing members are allowed toparticipate in the Parliamentary primaries, Parliamentarycandidates may not afford to influence voters with money; this he believes will helpto curb the menace in political primaries.

“We should expand the electoral college for any card bearing member to vote in any parliamentary primaries becauseunder no circumstance should the election of parliamentary candidates be based on vote buying”,Mr. Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu stated in an interview.

The law maker said again that Political parties must be responsible to maintain the experienced MPs.
He argued that, opening of nominations every 4 years for the election of parliamentary candidates has usually resulted in the defeat of qualified and equipped MPs.

“There’s no where in the world do political parties open Parliamentary nominations every 4 years for party members to contest, it is never done anywhere”, he lamented.
For this reason political parties in Ghana should reconsider their decision to extend the number of years set for the opening of nominations.
